Summer in South Africa does something to skin that winter never does. Heat, humidity on the coast, long days outdoors and a UV index that sits in the high to extreme range for most of the season all change what your skin needs. The routine that kept you comfortable in July can start to feel heavy, greasy or just wrong by November.
The good news is that you don't need a whole new shelf. A few small swaps usually do it.
Oily or shiny skin in summer is often still dehydrated skin. When you skip moisturiser, skin can respond by producing more oil, not less. Swap a rich cream for something lighter that hydrates without sitting on top.
If you're prone to breakouts when it's hot, our Salicylic Acid 2% Moisturiser is built for exactly this. It hydrates while the salicylic acid works on clogged pores and oil. Because salicylic acid can increase sun sensitivity, always finish your morning routine with SPF.
This is the big one. South African summer UV is strong enough to cause damage on cloudy days, during a quick school run or through a car window. Apply SPF every morning, then reapply every two hours if you're outside, and after swimming or sweating.
Reapplying is where most of us fall down, which is why we like a stick. The SPF 50+ Sunscreen + Niacinamide 5% Stick gives broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection with a matte finish, and it fits in a pocket or beach bag. You can swipe it on over makeup without wrecking your base.
By 3pm on a 32-degree day, skin can feel tight, oily and tired all at once. A face mist gives you a quick reset without having to wash your face.
Our Niacinamide Serum Mist is an ultra-fine mist with niacinamide, aloe vera and allantoin. It's designed to help visibly reduce pimples and the look of enlarged pores, and you can use it up to three times a day, on bare skin or over makeup. Keep it in your bag or the fridge for a cooling hit.
Heat and sun already put skin under stress. If you use strong acids or retinol, consider using them less often in summer, and always at night. Never skip SPF the morning after.
Lips burn and dry out too. Use a lip balm with SPF during the day, and give them some attention at night. Body breakouts on the back and chest also tend to flare when it's hot and you're sweating more. We'll cover both in more detail over the next few weeks.
Morning: gentle cleanse, light serum, light moisturiser, SPF 50+.
During the day: mist when you need a refresh, reapply SPF every two hours outdoors.
Evening: cleanse properly to remove SPF and sweat, treatment serum if you use one, moisturiser.
Keep it simple, keep it light and keep the sunscreen coming. Your skin will thank you in March.
